Picture Books About Obama, McCain and Clinton

These books just came across my desk and are excellent. Since they are in picture book format they are very accessible to the younger readers but contain enough substance to introduce the candidates to the older reader as well.

Grimes, Nikki. (2008) Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope. Illustrations by Bryan Collier. Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. ISBN 13: 978-1-4169-7144-3. $16.99
'
McCain, Meghan. (2008) My Dad, John McCain. Illustrated by Dan Anreassen. Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers. ISBN 13: 978-1-4169-7528-1. $16.99

And I am sure Simon and Schuster were hedging their bets as they also have issued a great biography of Hillary Rodham Clinton. But despite the fact taht she did not get the nomination, I think if Obama gets the nod from the country, Hillary will get a nod from him for some prestigious and meaningful spot in his administration so you might be interested in this title:

Krull, Kathleen. Hillary Rodham Clinton: Dreams Taking Flight. Illustrated by Amy June Bates. Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers. ISBN 13: 978-1-4169-7129-0.

Kathleen Krull is a superb biographer and this title certainly meets expectations and I found the title by Nikki Grimes to be extremely well-written and very interesting as I did not know much about his childhood etc. Somehow he doesn't seem like a "Barry." The McCain biography is somewhat less satisfying, seeming to be somewhat more nostalgic than biographical and certainly more political speech than about his actual achievements. The book does have a nice segment regarding his POW years and the military tradition in his family.
